Dr. Pugh's Interests, Academic and Otherwise
I serve as an editor on Steinbeck journals both in the US and in Japan, and now I am a co-director helping in the preparations for an International Steinbeck Congress to be held in Kyoto.
I am also active in the Kyushu American Literature Society and I am currently doing research on phenomenology and literature. In addition, I am much interested in nature writing and ecocriticism, so I am now preparing a paper on the representation of nature in the postmodern novel White Noise by Don DeLillo. Professors have little time for leisure activities, but when I can find a spare moment I enjoy studying Fukuoka Prefecture's natural wonders. Did you know thata a nearby beach has more than 500 kinds of seashells? And did you know that one of the world's rarest birds visits Fukuoka every winter? Nature and literature have a close connection, don't you think?
